Oliguria is decreased production of urine.It can be defined as a urine output that is less than 400 mL/day in adults or approximately less than 6ml/kg/day. It is often the earliest sign of impaired kidney function, indicating acute renal failure, kidney inflammation, urinary obstruction (like in enlarged prostate) and urinary retention. It may also indicate dehydration due to diarrhea, vomiting and fever, vascular collapse and low cardiac output.

Useful herbs

Abronia villosa

To induce the flow of urine (plant); to treat burns (roots)

Alisma plantago-aquatica

Helps to treat renal calculus, cystitis, dysentery and epilepsy (dried leaves); for hydrophobia, to lower blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar levels, oliguria, oedema, nephritis, acute diarrhoea and fatty liver (roots); for leprosy, to bruises and swellings (fresh leaves); to promote conception (whole plant).

Boerhavia diffusa

To treat anaemia, oedema, internal abscess, calculi, eye diseases, oedema during pregnancy, haemoptysis, for inducing sleep, fever, rheumatic ailments, difficult labour, vaginal pain, rejuvinative, asthma, oedema, anaemia, jaundice, ascites, anasarca, scanty urine and internal inflammation. It is also an antidote to snake poisoning.

Cyperus esculentus

Promote urine production and menstruation (plant); in the treatment of flatulence, indigestion, colic, diarrhoea, dysentery, debility and excessive thirst (tubers)

Digitalis lanata

To treat dropsy, asthma, edema or palpitations, has a profound tonic effect upon a diseased heart, enabling the heart to beat more slowly, powerfully and regularly without requiring more oxygen, stimulates the flow of urine which lowers the volume of the blood and lessens the load on the heart

Digitalis lutea

For heart complaints (plant); in the treatment of a weakened or failing heart, increasing the strength of contraction, slowing and steadying the heart rate and lowering blood pressure by strongly stimulating the flow of urine - which reduces overall blood volume (leaves)

Dioscorea opposita

Promotes urination, lower blood sugar, lower blood pressure, antibiotic, anti aging, improves digestive system, in treating the symptoms associated with diabetes, and chronic wheezing and coughing.

Echallium elaterium

Hepatitis (nasal drops US patent), increase urine flow.

Elsholtzia ciliata

To relieve the effects of excess alcohol, in the treatment of common colds, fevers, headaches, diarrhoea, oedema and oliguria.

Ipomoea nil

It is used in the treatment of oedema, oliguria, ascariasis and constipation. The seed contains small quantities of the hallucinogen LSD. This is used medicinally in the treatment of various mental disorders.

Juniperus communis

In urinary tract diseases, dropsy, digestive maladies, maladies associated with the chills, rheumatism and body aches. Oil of Juniper is given as a diuretic, stomachic, and carminative in indigestion, flatulence, and diseases of the kidney and bladder. The oil mixed with lard is also used in veterinary practice as an application to exposed wounds and prevents irritation from flies. Spirit of Juniper is employed as a stimulating diuretic in cardiac and hepatic dropsy. The fruit is readily eaten by most animals, especially sheep, and to prevent and cure dropsy.

Physalis alkekengi

In the treatment of urinary and skin diseases (plant); in the treatment of gravel, suppression of urine etc and is highly recommended in fevers and in gout, in the treatment of kidney and bladder disorders (fruit);to promote early labour (seed).

Thymus linearis

In suppressed urine & menstruation, catarrh, and whooping-coughs (plant);in asthma, cold and to expel round worm (dried leaves); to cure gum and toothache (young flower) .
